The Lowther Estates covers some 70,000 acres and can offer virtually every type of sporting let over mountain, moorland, wood and farmland as well as trout and salmon fishing in the river Eden and its tributaries the River Lowther and the River Eamont.
Roe Deer Stalking
Accompanied roe deer stalking is let by the outing (two to three hours at dawn and dusk). Good quality roe stalking with two gold and one silver medal bucks being taken in the last year. The majority of the buck stalking is done in May and June or in the rut in July and we try to get the doe cull done as early as possible in November and December.
Most Roe Stalking is done on foot although high seats are occasionally used and all stalking is done under the direction of Head Stalker Gregor Cattanach. |

Red Deer Stalking
Top quality "highland" stalking in fantastic scenery on the Shap fells on the edge of the Lake District. An eight wheel Glen Almond ATV is used for access onto the hill and bringing out stags and hinds in season. Stags with good heads and exceptional body weights (often over 20 stone) are common with stalking let by the day.
All stalking is preceded by a session on the Estate range to zero rifles. An Estate rifle can be hired and all stalkers must have valid fire arms certificate and insurance.
Shooting
Rough shooting is available with everything from rabbit shooting to snipe shooting on moorland edges, walked up grouse and low ground hedgerow days for pheasants and partridges. Ideal days for dog handlers
wanting exercise and training for both dog and master. |
Duck Flighting
The Estate has nearly a dozen small duck flighting ponds with Mallard and Teal being the main quarry. These are let to parties of up to eight guns on a fortnightly basis.
Driven Shooting
Driven pheasant and partridge shooting has been suspended on the home beat as the Estate alters its policy from putting down pheasants and partridges to promoting a wild bird shoot. We have entered a Countryside Stewardship Scheme planting significant lengths of new hedgerows and it is hoped that these combined with permanent conservation
game strips will result in a good wild bird shoot in two or three years time. |

Grouse Shooting
Grouse have not been driven on the Estate for some years due primarily to over grazing of the heather moorland by sheep and a loss of habitat. Again the Estate has entered Countryside Stewardship and Wild Life Enhancement Schemes with the aim
of restoring heather. This programme is now well under way and combined with more active keepering should see a return to producing driven grouse in the next two or three years.
Fishing
Excellent wild brown trout fishing in the River Lowther and Eamont (fly only) is combined with salmon fishing on the River Eden. Rods are let on a daily or weekly basis.
